Large Hadron Collider Disaster

Well folks, see you tomorrow if this doesn’t happen:

If you don’t even know what the Large Hadron Collider is, well, you’re too late for the party.

Since it didn’t happen, here’s the Large Hadron Rap: (portuguese subtitles by partner blog ViDig)

Oh, for those who were a little disappointed by the world not ending, don’t give up just yet!
Here’s the thing: even the news were wrong on this one… last night, what really went there on CERN was the first TEST with the LHC.
The real particle collision, that one that will possibly create micro black holes and reproduct a micro Big Bang is scheduled for October 21st.

In other words, conspiracy theorists still have one more month to have some fun! XD

But basically, all things ok, as predicted.

Of course, if even so the disaster doesn’t happen, we can always count on the other alternative. XD

UPDATE 2!
So folks, it seems we have another couple of months of planet Earth!
Apparently, a problem that was diagnosed right after the first test, was worse than initially thought.

According to CERN scientists, something that was kinda predicted on a massive structure like LHC, but which will take time to fix.
In a few words, they had an electrical problem on some superconducting magnetsm which ended up melting. Some helium gas also leaked.
Problem is: Those magnets, to work at optimal conditions, are kept in temperatures close to absolute zero.
And the process of getting that temperature up so the crew can repair the system, and then turning it down again takes weeks.

So, that’s it, just to keep you informed!
